The dead man sat at the edge of the circular window frame, fragments of broken glass still attached around it. The city continued to cry that acid rain, a poor attempt to cleanse its streets from the vermin and death and violence and chaos. It cried out in inanimate pain, and Eric watched it contort its ugly face before him. Oh how he’d once loved the skyline, but this had been before meeting Shelly, before gaining something to lose. And he’d lost her. The city, its crime ridden streets had costed him both their lives. An ache burnt behind his eyes, tears fueled by rage and loss begging to be let out. His gaze faltering, but still away from the girl.

His leg bent, boot on the round window frame, knee hoisting his arm horizontally. An unnecessary breath relieved the pressure on his chest.

“It’s not that simple, Sarah.” he spoke, his voice soft and low. He’d been stuck here much too long. He wanted to see Shelly again. He ached for her. To see her, to hear her voice, to hold her again. For a dead man who could not be hurt, his pain at the memory of her was immeasurable. But how could he go to her? AVENGING her hadn’t returned him to her. What else was there? He bird did not tell, nor the skeletal figure.

“And I don’t know what else to do.” he finally confessed, hope plummeting from within.
