"You know that little voice inside your head that tells you not to do the thing? Listen to it next time."

. INBOX MEME .       ( terrible choices sentence starters )

Astonishing how Sarah could invoke the essence of his former self. Silly, perhaps, of her to forget he was dead already. Stuck in a never-ending cycle, in a poor man’s purgatory. Full of painful memories he had to revisit at every moment he spent in the realm of the living, surrounded by the remnants of a long-gone happiness. Yet she still worried about him. About his actions, at the very least.

She shouldn’t have been around when he attempted to run off those men— and Eric scolded himself for not paying attention. Dead men didn’t worry about getting hurt, but collateral damage remained a possibility when the living intervened. Or when the dead cared for them. A contradiction, a conflict. How could he explain to the girl he couldn’t worry about consequences any longer?
Remind her he was of a posthumous state?

No. The black-clad man — what remained of Eric Draven in him — knew better than.

That little voice inside his head no longer took priority.

That little voice inside his head now told him to kill evil men.

“Sarah—” an echo of his past life spoke for him, tactful and caring. “— as long as you’re around, I promise that I will.” carefully measured words were spoken. A small promise he intended to keep. “But you must promise me, no matter what happens—” she was much too young for this “…you will keep safe.” even if it meant not seeing him again. Eric knew there would come a time again when he would have to leave for good.

though small,  a smile materializes  & floods juvenile features with warmth.   ❛   totally.   ❜   she’s emerged in a sense of  normality  in these visits  —  conversations,  even of this matter,  treasured  &  easy with flow.  the overabundance of responsibility felt on temporary hold,  an  alien  concept back in her own place of stay.   ❛   you know what sounds good ?   breakfast for dinner.   &  i’m not talkin’ about some toast n’ cereal,  but  the works.   ❜

An immediate smile found its way traced across his lips, almost childish. Then the prospect of such a heavy meal being served as a closing of the day made the musician ponder whether or not it was a good idea. His instinct, however, had been to agree. “—- Bacon and eggs?” Eric half-teased, “Orange juice and toast on the side?” as he spoke, there no longer was a doubt. “Alright, but if Shelly asks, it was your idea.”

❛   oh,  jeez,  how could i forget ?   ❜   it’s almost  compulsive,  the way her eyes tip behind top lids in  prime example of what landed them on the subject in the first place.  laughable,  really,  but she wouldn’t give him the pleasure.   ❛   yeah,  i mean,  might as well.   darla  hasn’t gone for groceries in,  like,  two weeks  &  as much as it pains me to even admit  —  i might just  hurl  if i have to eat one more street vendor hot dog.  ❜

There they went again — youthful coquettes tracing her features with humor & rebellion. Eric, instead of a sign of disrespect ( as most would, one could assume ) he felt it charming. Like the kid sister he never had. “Good.” Eric said, nearly parental. “Though a fervent admirer, urban delicacies must be kept to a minimum.” Needless to say, Sarah was always welcomed into their ( Eric’s & Shelly’s ) little home.

❛   ya know,  i hear the same about   musicians.  hard to look normal with all that leather  &   repressed teenage angst  bubbling its way up through hairstyle  &  makeup choice.  besides,  if that’s gonna be the best case scenario,  then ‘least maybe i’ll be  bendy  enough to give ya a punch to the gut from all the way across the room !   ❜

“Someone’s testy today—- and it’s not all leather, Sarah. There’s vinyl too.” Teeth exposed, Eric knew he’d provoked her. Though all in good nature, the musician’s playfulness tended to gain him a couple of words from the girl. Had Shelly been with them, she’d shake her head in disapproval. “You’re staying for dinner, right?”

❛   yeah,  yeah  —  &  swallowin’ gum means it’s gonna take seven years to digest.  seems like i’m gonna be vision impaired  &  part  wrigley  for years to come,  huh ?   ❜

“Afraid so… but I wouldn’t worry too much if I were you.  I hear most professional skateboarders are funny-looking anyway. Best case scenario, you end up bendy like the purple kid from Willy Wonka.”
